Hello, my name is Matty Schreck, and I’m the Head of Design here at WiseTech Global. While most of my 35+ strong Design team works on our industry-leading platform CargoWise, I have a very interesting and engaging leadership position to fill for our online learning platform for the logistics industry - WiseTech Academy.

WiseTech Academy is a division of WiseTech Global, launched in 2018, with the mission to provide accessible online learning for the logistics industry. Our platform offers comprehensive content on supply chain logistics, WiseTech Global product training and certification, and corporate compliance training such as handling dangerous goods and biosecurity. Our team supports various systems, including our website, Learning Management System (LMS), Content Management System (CMS), Quiz Engine and Content Creation Application. We deliver online, mobile-engaged, interactive learning that's high quality and delivered to users when they need it. Our learning portal has achieved a world-first for fully-online, internationally accredited dangerous goods courses.

We’re looking for a Lead Designer to lead our WiseTech Academy Design team

WiseTech Academy currently has two highly capable Product Designers embedded within five separate R&D teams, trying to cover as much of the needs of those teams as possible. We now need to expand the impact of the team, and for this, we need a Lead Designer who can both manage the two Product Designers, and work on Academy projects of their own. There is also a headcount open for yet another individual contributor, but we want to bring the leader in first, before we increase the team further.

This Lead Designer will take their place as part of the WiseTech Academy leadership team, together with Product Managers, Heads of Content, Languages, Marketing, Sales, etc. If you’re looking for a ‘seat at the table’ - that’s a significant part of this role. You’ll be representing the Design function in the business as an embedded Designer, and your input will influence the strategy and prioritisation decisions directly. You’ll be reporting to me, and will also be part of my Design leadership team.

The Design team at WiseTech Academy is still less than two years old, and thus you will be a significant positive influence on its ways of working, its structure, and its culture. You’ll be supported in this by me and my team, and by your Academy colleagues who are very keen to see you succeed.

Let me list a few more characteristics of the Lead Designer I’m looking for:

  • You’re able to tackle a vast spectrum of challenges of moderate to high complexity. We expect that you can carry a project through the entire double diamond of design thinking. You’ve built up a toolset of reliable methods and techniques to achieve the best outcomes for your projects.

  • You can integrate yourself into existing workflows of your team, but you’re also comfortable to stand up for your own and your Designers' needs. You happily educate your cross-functional peers on the value of modern Product Design, and gain their trust through great collaboration skills and the high quality of the work outcomes you provide. You need to be a Design pioneer who loves changing hearts and minds.

  • You need to be able to pursue outcomes pragmatically, rather than sticking to processes too rigidly. You have to be able to make decisions even if there’s a high level of uncertainty.

  • The WiseTech Academy web properties cover a lot of ground, and you need to be very comfortable making calls about visual execution. The Academy exists outside of our CargoWise design system, and therefore you’ll benefit from familiarity with visual design, design systems, and accessibility.

  • You love coaching others, and have had at least some experience in leading a small team of Designers. You’ll look after their skill growth, help them with their work, and craft a supportive culture in your team that benefits everyone.

  • You are comfortable speaking your mind and constructively influencing other stakeholders in a leadership team. Your voice at WiseTech Academy will matter, and you will have regular sessions with the Head of WiseTech Academy, both in group settings and 1:1.

  • We are a hybrid office culture in Sydney, so this role is strictly Sydney only.

You will be an important part of a larger WiseTech Global Design team

As the WiseTech Academy Design team is part of the larger WTG Design team, you and your team are part of our weekly rituals. We meet in our (soon to be very new) office in Alexandria once every week, and all come together for our Design Showcase, where we present deep dives of our work to each other. We also have our Design Critique ritual, where we show the work that has been done, and open it up to feedback from others.

And you will also be part of WiseTech Academy

There are other recurring rituals that come from the WiseTech Academy, which you and your team will benefit from, like project pitching sessions, leadership meetings, and social events.

A job ad can only ever be the beginning of a conversation. If you feel that your unique skill set could do what we’ve described above, then it’s worth a shot. We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
