Get to know some of our current interns and find out why they’re pursuing a career in technology, their experiences at WiseTech so far, and advice for their younger selves.
What are you studying and where?
I am currently studying a Bachelor of Information Technology (Co-op) at the University of Technology Sydney. I’m in my final year and am due to graduate in November 2022.
Why did you decide to study your degree?
I decided to study my chosen degree due to my passion and desire to learn more about the everchanging world that is IT. The Information Technology program at UTS, in particular, was unique in the way that it provided me with industry-connected teaching and real-life practice-based learning making it an attractive course. The opportunity to be able to pursue a sub-major in my field of choice (Data Analytics), also provided me with a broader learning experience and one which I was able to tailor and develop to my own personal preferences.
Have you always known you wanted to work in the tech industry?
Yes! One of the greatest things about working in a constantly evolving industry like tech is that there are always new experiences and new skills to develop. My enthusiasm to learn these skills, and my interest in learning more about the world of IT was something that I developed throughout my schooling and indicated to me that a career in tech would suit me perfectly.
Which team are you currently in at WiseTech and what sort of work are you doing?
Currently, I am working as a Software Engineer within the International Forwarding Team. This involves making incremental updates and changes to the forwarding modules found within the CargoWise product.
What was it about WiseTech that appealed to you?
One thing in particular that stood out to me about WiseTech Global was the inviting and friendly work environment. As someone with quite limited experience in the world of IT and software development, I was really happy with the patience and positive encouragement that I received. This indicated to me that WiseTech was committed to improving my understanding of the software development field, and also committed to helping me achieve my personal learning goals.
What are you hoping to get out of your time at WiseTech?
I am hoping to take away from my experience at WiseTech a more complete and holistic understanding of the IT field. As a university student with not a whole lot of real exposure to the world of technology, I have been so surprised to learn about the broadness of the IT industry. Thus, I would like to make the most of my time working with professionals to learn and understand more about WiseTech and its role in the broader tech Industry.
What (or who) inspires or motivates you in life?
I have found that personally, I motivate myself through the activities and hobbies that I pursue outside of work. On the weekends I coach a junior cricket team. which is an incredibly rewarding job that I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to doing each week. I also love working out at the gym with friends and playing oz tag and basketball in local competitions.
If you could choose anyone to mentor you, who would it be and why?
I would choose Sundar Pichai the current CEO of Alphabet Inc, the parent company of Google. I believe it would be an incredible opportunity to learn about the way in which a top executive works and I would personally look at how I may apply some of the insights shared by him into my own work.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Take every opportunity that presents itself to you! Regardless of whether or not you have a positive experience with it, treat it as a chance for learning and find a way to grow from it as a better, well-rounded person.
